Setelah sukses lewat film narkoba Trainspotting, menggebrak dunia film horror lewat 28 Days Later dan kini menyumbangkan satu lagi karyanya, sebuah fiksi ilmiah berjudul Sunshine. Sangat tepat jadwal mengingat sekarang adalah generasi pemanasan global karena jika matahari mati, matilah kita. Semua orang membutuhkan film tentang pemanasan global seperti The Day After Tomorrow. Mungkin Sunshine bisa dikatakan usaha mengembalikan matahari setelah jaman es terjadi. Tapi kamingnya, semua orang hanya membutuhkan film bencana akibat pemanasan global. Bukannya film produksi Inggris yang ternyata lebih baik daripada The Day After Tomorrow ini. Diceritakan tahun 2057, saat bumi kita sudah diselimuti salju, matahari sekarat dan manusia manghadapi kepunahan dan hanya bisa berharap pada delapan orang ilmuan yang diberikan misi membawa sinar matahari kembali ke bumi dengan menggunakan senjata nuklir. Berangkat ke luar angkasa dengan pesawat Icarus II selama bertahun-tahun. Selama perjalanan menuntaskan misi, banyak halangan dan kejutan yang siap menyambut mereka. Lengkap dari kesalahan teknis, sifat egois, kontak radio dengan Icarus I yang sudah mengudara bertahun-tahun yang lalu sampai yang sudah biasa, matinya personel Icarus II. Tidak ada kemenangan tanpa pengorbanan. Yang kali ini mereka pertaruhkan bukan hanya nyawa mereka sendiri, namun semua manusia dan biosfer yang terdapat di planet bernama bumi.
Apa yang dipaparkan Boyle sangatlah detail dan jelas. Bagaimana kehidupan para astronot di sana, hiburan dan ketakutan mereka, rasa rindu mereka terhadap bumi, perselisihan diantara para astronot dan bagaimana mereka makan dan menghirup oksigen di angkasa luar. Semua diterjemahkan sangat manusiawi ke dalam pita seluloid. Kali ini masih ditonjolkan duet aktor muda Cillian Murphy dan Boyle setelah sukses dengan 28 Days Later. Entah demi alasan target penonton atau apalah, di sini hampir semua pemain utama adalah remaja. Dan itu menjadikan Sunshine seperti kisah fiksi ilmiah remaja. Jelas berbeda dengan Armageddon yang para astronotnya rata-rata adalah orang dewasa. Mengenai plot, mungkin kita sudah bisa memprediksi ending film ini, tetapi tidak pada pengembangan konfliknya Melihat perkembangan ceritanya, kami lebih menyimpulkan klimaks pada seperempat bagian terakhir film adalah horror thriller, hanya saja lokasinya di luar angkasa ditambah penggunaan efek khusus yang blak-blakan. Bukan film epik yang seperti kita kira sebelumnya. Bagaimanapun juga Boyle berhasil menyusun plotnya dengan baik sehingga mampu membawa aura ketegangan dengan setting futuristik.
